The storm's passed, the tree's down, and the yard looks like a pickup-sticks game played by giants. What you do in the first hour matters — for safety, for insurance, and for not turning a bad situation into an expensive one. Five steps, in order.
1. Keep everyone clear
Downed and damaged trees are stored energy: trunks under tension, limbs hanging by fibers, root plates that can settle or snap back. Keep kids, pets, and curious neighbors away from the whole area. If any part of the tree touched a structure, watch indoors for ceiling sag or new cracks and keep out of rooms underneath it.
2. Treat every wire as live
If the tree is anywhere near a power line — touching it, under it, or near one that's down — the situation changes category. Stay far back, keep others back, and call the utility first. Lines that look dead can be energized remotely without warning. No cleanup begins until the electrical question is settled.
3. Document before anything moves
Photos and video, from multiple angles, before a single cut: the tree as it lies, the point where it failed, every structure it touched, and any damage to the roof, fence, or vehicles. This is the insurance record. It takes five minutes and it's nearly impossible to recreate after the chainsaws start.
4. Call your insurer if a structure was hit
When a tree strikes a covered structure, removal and repair typically fall under the claim — and the insurer may want to see the scene or authorize emergency work. A quick call starts that clock. Trees that fell in the open yard without hitting anything are usually the owner's cost, but the documentation is still worth having.
5. Bring in the pros for the dangerous part
Small limbs on open ground are fair homeowner territory. Anything involving a tree on a structure, a split trunk under tension, or wood over a walkway is not — that's rigging work, and it's where storm injuries happen. The pros take the hazard down in controlled pieces, then the rest of the cleanup is straightforward.
