BinghamtonEvery year, well-meaning homeowners pay to have their trees topped — crowns lopped flat to bring a too-tall tree down to size. It looks decisive. It feels solved. It is, in fact, the single most damaging thing routinely done to trees, and it creates exactly the danger it was hired to prevent.
A topped tree reads the injury as an emergency. It responds by pushing dense clusters of fast-growing shoots — water sprouts — from every cut. These shoots grow with remarkable speed, which is why homeowners initially think the topping 'worked.' The tree looks full again within a couple of seasons.
The problem is how those shoots attach. Normal limbs grow from within the branch collar, locked into the trunk's structure. Water sprouts attach to the surface of the cut, anchored in the outermost layers of wood. They grow fast, they get heavy, and their attachment stays weak — permanently.
Topping cuts are large wounds the tree cannot seal. Decay enters the flat, exposed cut face and works down into the trunk and the remaining branch stubs. Within years, the water sprouts — those weakly attached, heavy new limbs — are anchored into wood that is actively rotting. The tree has become a structure of heavy limbs attached to decaying wood. This is why topped trees fail in storms that sound trees shrug off.
Topping isn't even cheap in the long run. The regrowth needs constant management — the homeowner has signed up for a maintenance cycle that never ends — and the tree's shortened, hazardous life usually ends in an early removal that costs more than the proper pruning ever would have. Pay once to damage the tree, then keep paying to manage the damage.
Proper crown reduction achieves what people actually want from topping: a smaller, safer tree. Selected limbs are reduced back to suitable side branches at proper cut points, lowering the canopy while keeping its natural architecture intact. The tree seals the cuts, keeps its strength, and stays a tree instead of becoming a maintenance subscription.
